After much much delay I'm posting regarding our racism rule revisited....(a personal aside, the place my friend is moving too is still being worked on, we are hoping he can move in there within a couple weeks as i don't think the full impact of everything will hit him until he's in a new place and i thank everyone for their well wishes, thoughts and even gifts for my friend!!!)....
i made a sticky post for vintage ads.....so it'll always be on top....sends people to our rules, mentions DW, and yeah, puts forth a dig at LJ! :) i suppose it needs a reference to Hall & Oates though! i shall have to edit that!!!
now, back to our racism rule revisited.....it was about 50/50 when i first asked about it....when i asked again, it was overwhelming for the removal for the rule....everyone has valid points and as i have written before, i try to take everyone under consideration....what i have thought about and thought about was two things:
we didn't have this rule for many years and functioned fine (i do NOT want to make anyone feel that their complaints about some ads are not valid, because i can see your point and i empathize and i will make another point about this below, so please keep reading)....
and since we had it, the ads where people requested a cut (also ignoring the rule we have, whereby if you wish to request a cut, you contact ME, you don't post a comment on the post, only unless someone posts a NSFW w/o a cut) i would not have ruled towards a cut....
those two things were what i kept thinking about.....especially the first one.....now i don't know how many of you remember the long long long ago when there was someone here who posted racist ads and they were promoting racism (anyone else remember that??)....of course that person is no longer here....when these ads are posted now no one posts them to promote racism, they post them because they are historical, they are shocked, etc.....if
ANYONE tried to post such ads with ulterior motives and were being racist, they would swiftly be shown the door.....if a poster posted started posting racist ad after racist ad i would ask them what they were doing, as they are infrequent.....
we have a zero tolerance for intolerance here and that will remain.....we have worldwide members though who don't really understand racism in the united states, and there are racial/ethnic conflicts in other parts of the world where i don't think most of us americans fully understand.....when these ads appear we have discussions many times and it's an opportunity to learn.....
now i can hear someone say if we have zero tolerance for intolerance why not demand a cut? no, different situation....if you are looking at an ad, it's different from a commenter spouting off racism in the comments (if you see that, let me know ASAP and they'll be shown the door)....and as many pointed out, why just racist ads? why not sexist ads? or someone mentioned you could really take it far and request ads with dogs if you once had a traumatic experience being bitten by a dog.....that was a good point.....and we don't have a sexual violence concern as i would never EVER allow ads depicting sexual violence here, NEVER.....
having said that, prior to this rule being in effect, there was several instances where people contacted me about ads they found to be EXTREMELY offensive and they were removed.....i do not want anyone to feel they can't contact me if an ad is really extremely offensive.....i am not going to say what these ads were, but i remember 2 of them.....i won't let them be posted again.....the poster meant nothing malicious, they were appalled such ads existed, but they were very extreme....
so i know some of you will be disappointed and i apologize, and i empathize....this is why we did this short term to try it out and get feedback after a couple months.....it didn't work and the feedback is for removing the rule....

On occasion you may find an ad posted that comes from a different era and to our modern eyes shows instances of blatant racism, sexism, elitism or other objectionable and abhorrent qualities that we would not allow in today's advertising. These ads are products of their time and you will find that the comments on such ads show shock that such ads were ever acceptable in society. These ads are never posted as a sign of agreement or diffidence to such matters, they are posted to remind us how far we have come in society and at times to remind us how far we still need to go.
We apologize in advance if some of these ads make you feel uncomfortable. We would like everyone to feel welcome here. Putting these ads behind a cut though is hiding history. Therefore the only ads that are mandated to go behind a cut are NSFW ads. If a member has a problem with an ad's content or if they feel the poster is trying to promote or condone hatred, discrimination or bigotry, please contact your mod or a co-mod ASAP. There have been several prior instances where this has happened and we have removed ads. So please do not hesitate to contact us.
