I count the word "digestible" occurring fifteen times in this ad.

Use Crisco. It's DIGESTIBLE.

The walnut squares don't sound too bad - but what exactly is Crisco? I am sure we don't have it here.

Crisco is just vegetable shortening.

Between this and the ads we've seen for another shortening (Spry or something like that?) I'm wondering what the deal was with 'indigestible' food back then.

They had to convince housewives to switch from butter or lard. Vegetable shortening's actually a pretty important product in the history of advertising--it was one of the first products that was marketed based on extensive consumer research. The comic book style ads we're seeing heralding how light and digestible the product is are directly related to the questions housewives had about this new shortening.

"Jim" "Ida" "Jim" I don't really see that many pronouns. Did the ad people think we were going to forget their names?

So you can tell us...is it really, truly "digestible"

If Crisco makes her food that much more digestible than whatever she was using before, I really have to wonder what she was using. Paraffin?

In the light of what we now know about trans fats, it makes me wonder what current health arguments turn out to be straight out lies in the future. I'm betting on "Non-fat is healthy" and "the more fiber the better!"

Hmm... Lemon pie: looks nice... Walnut squares: not too bad... Potato boats: AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHH. "Fill with creamed meat." NO NO NO NO NO.

From: [identity profile] blue-sky-lark.livejournal.com
I don't even want to know how one creams meat.

Hit it with a car?

Blend it with whipping cream?

Whack it silly with a baseball bat?

Well, considering the era the ad is from, I'm sure it had something to do with nuclear power or something atomic...

To be honest, it's only been two years since I realised Crisco was some sort of vegetable shortening. All the years before that, the only Crisco I knew of was the one Calvin (Calvin and Hobbes) used to style his hair with. I've never been able to find Crisco digestible since.

I'm 20 ._____.

Wasn't the point that Calvin put *shortening* on his hair?

I'm actually amazed by how edible these things are compared to other foods that have been suggested in ads. No lime Jell-o in sight. I'd eat those potato boats, even if I have no idea what creamed meat is supposed to be. Can't be all bad, right?

Okay what exactly is the definition of "digestible" that we are supposed to assume in this context? I'm confused. Does animal shortening make you fart more than vegetable shortening or something?

thats what i was thinking with the whole "agree with you" part. as in cabbage does not "agree" with me, but i mean its not plastic -- i'm still digesting it.
