How cool is this? This is pre-rap. I loved this commercial when I was a kid.

7 Wednesday ONE DAY EVENT: Ear worm Jingles. Jingles that bore into your brain and remain for decades. I'm a pepper, wouldn't you like to be a pepper too?

I remember I used to hear this jingle often on the radio back in the 70s; not only is it a catchy tune, but I think it's kinda classy—everything a jingle should be!

From the site:

"I will warn you now, this jingle is dangerously catchy, and depending on how you feel about getting ear-worms, it's either the jingle from hell or it's heaven sent. So, I'm sorry. Or, you're welcome. (Also, I'd love to hear Mx. Justin V. Bond sing a version of this!)"

(Singing) "Suddenly, there’s a heavenly fragrance that clings. It’s Heaven Sent

Suddenly, you’re an imp wearing angel’s wings

In Heaven Sent, suddenly, you are all the things you want to be, a little bit naughty but heavenly..in Heaven Sent!

(Male voiceover) Heaven sent fragrance by Helena Rubinstein. Spray it on, and heavenly things happen. Heaven Sent. Splash in it, laugh in it, live in it, love in it. You’ll find Heaven Sent fragrance at Helena Rubinstein counters everywhere.

...Suddenly you are all the things you want to be, a little bit naughty but heavenly...in Heaven Sent!"

YouTube description says this commercial features "that kid from Christmas Story," whoever that is.

The above is the Folger's® jingle as performed by Rockapella; I thought the sound quality was better than the actual commercial. Here's the 1980s commercial for Folger's®:

N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestles makes the very best - CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCLATE!!!

(a catchy earworm of a jingle if there ever was one!)

As I've mentioned before, Barry Manilow was king of the jingles in the 70s and 80s:

Like a good neighbor, I'm placing these under a cut )

"And when they called me to write a douche commercial, I said 'No.'"

When I think of classic ads from my area, the first thing to come to mind is a ridiculously catchy radio jingle for a furniture store that's been playing since the early 90s. I'm not sure if it's old enough to count as vintage, though, and the only audio I can find of it online is from an ad that's less than a year old, so I'll just provide a link for anyone who wants to get that earworm in their head all day.

Instead, here is a page from a 1908 Steel Pier program. There are a ridiculous number of cool old ads from Atlantic City out there, but by the time I found a really great one, this event would probably be over. I chose this one because of that super-cool font on the Kodak ad which looks like it could have been printed decades later than it actually was. I don't have access to a scanner right now, so you'll have to excuse the photograph...

also, "curried lobster"? Blech...

The jingle is bound to be an earworm for people of a certain age:

For no reason other than the jingle popped into my head and won't leave. Now it can be in yours, too!

One of the longest running and most popular ad campaigns in Australia.

Originally created in 1957 for Mortein fly spray, this 1962 version which started the jingle has continued through the years.

There's also a more recent 1990's version among others.

WFMU's wonderful "Beware of the Blog" is a fantastic, eclectic mix of just about everything except classical music (and even dips into that once in a blue moon). One sort of music they return to again and again is the "Industrial Musical," where whole albums of commercially oriented songs are often posted (and once posted, they remain available).

Dance the Slurp (7-11) -- mp3

Sometimes they are commercial jingles, tie-in albums, giveaways. Perhaps more often, they are recorded for sales meetings and annual events. They motivate salesmen and give them a party line to push.

He's a Penney Man -- mp3

Here is an album they've assembled with 20 tracks, in the hippest, coolest, most happenin' idioms of their day. Well, that was the intention, anyway. Results may vary, "daddy-o."

The Frito Twist -- mp3

The post gives links to more... and more... including an entire 50s musical presented at in-house company meetings. The enterprising listener can find even more by typing the words "industrial musical" in the search box on the left of the blog's front page.

The Eight Seasons of Chromalox -- mp3

Off the topic, they also have song-poems (people answered those magazine ads that say "HAVE YOUR POEMS SET TO MUSIC" and these are the result), strange evangelical music, obscure hits from other lands, and of course, present-day cutting edge music that I don't have time to look into. Without WFMU, it's possible I would go sane.

My Bathroom is a Private Kind of Place (American Standard) -- mp3

Too many to pick from.

My VIP - Tribute to Salesmen (Clark Equipment) -- mp3

Must. Stop.
