The times they are a changin' and Honest Ed's, Toronto's famous four floor bargain store, closed down December 31, 2016 after decades in business. The store was notable for it's great prices, hand painted signs and well, being a local landmark.

Whooops! Made a post to the wrong community on the weekend :-D

A couple of commercials featuring Great Western Garment Co.. GWG was a long running Canadian clothing manufacturer founded in 1911 in my hometown, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I wondered why one never hears of GWG anymore and it turns out that Levi Strauss shuttered the brand in 2004. The historic downtown factory stills stands.

I was the right age to have watched these commercials, but for some reason I don't recall them.

Who was it that said millions of 13 year old girls spontaneously lost their virginity when Bowie came on screen - just one look at that package in those tights...

I know he was a sexist monster. But I still liked the show.

My first car was a 1993 Mercury Sable wagon that I bought from [livejournal.com profile] equusmaximus about 8 years ago. I called him Remy and he needed a lot of repairs love, but he gave me the confidence and practice I needed to get my driver's licence. Really, if you can drive a giant station wagon, you can almost drive anything. Remy had peeling paint and I actually got a bumper sticker that said "This is not an abandoned car." My husband loved driving Remy in the winter because he was so bouncy and we lent him out to friends who needed a big ride. I regret that we never got to IKEA with him :-D. I hated that people thought Remy was gutless just because he looked like an old beater. That old engine could really move and I enjoyed speeding (just a little) down the country back road. Remy had lots of problems though - such as a finicky electrical system - and the sad decision was made to give Remy to the Kidney Foundation. Really miss him - but I imagine he's been reincarnated into something better.

[livejournal.com profile] dandyxr asked elsethread what our first cocktail was - here's mine:

I was 17, and had the peach-flavored one at a theatre group cast party...in front of my mother. (Quelle scandale!)

This guy may have had some influence on my decision. (Sadly, I couldn't find a better copy...)

One of my hobbies are Station Wagons.

I love mine. I love that it handels like a car, and holds as much as an SUV. I hate driving my moms CRV.

The previous post reminded me of this gem. My first car was a 1993 Mercury Sable Wagon LT that had seen better days by the time 2006 rolled around. Last year the Kidney Foundation came and took him - I was kind of sad to give away Remy. He was awesome and bouncy, but getting pretty unsafe to drive. We never did take that trip to IKEA that I promised him. Mercury Sable was the Canadian version of the Taurus wagon.
