TBT! Today I remember the silly car commercials of City Ford starring a caricature of Edmonton's Ukrainian population, Nicky Fordinski.

The ads usually paired Nicky with spokeswoman Shannon where they pitched great deals and ended with a corny joke, sometimes about Nicky's wife Nellie.

In actuality Nicky was Raymond Johnston who passed away in 2019. I used to think the commercials were funny as a kid; nowadays they're a little cringey. But the character was popular enough to last years and years!

Bonus: Not exactly an ad (unless you consider vintage packaging an ad) but it is proof that my hoarder Mother truly never threw anything away:

I like the wood block/arts and crafts look of this ad. Ford City became part of Windsor, Ontario in 1935. It is just east of the Walkerville neighbourhood (Where Hiram Walker built his distillery and model community). Ford Canada had a large factory along the Detroit River here, hence the name of the community, Ford City.

My first car was a 1993 Mercury Sable wagon that I bought from [livejournal.com profile] equusmaximus about 8 years ago. I called him Remy and he needed a lot of repairs love, but he gave me the confidence and practice I needed to get my driver's licence. Really, if you can drive a giant station wagon, you can almost drive anything. Remy had peeling paint and I actually got a bumper sticker that said "This is not an abandoned car." My husband loved driving Remy in the winter because he was so bouncy and we lent him out to friends who needed a big ride. I regret that we never got to IKEA with him :-D. I hated that people thought Remy was gutless just because he looked like an old beater. That old engine could really move and I enjoyed speeding (just a little) down the country back road. Remy had lots of problems though - such as a finicky electrical system - and the sad decision was made to give Remy to the Kidney Foundation. Really miss him - but I imagine he's been reincarnated into something better.

These were quite orange... always liked old pony cars. I was captivated by the Mach 1's in particular. (Mach Won!) That rear window was epic.

I read that seeing a poster for this movie inspired Bruce Springsteen to write his song of the same name, though he hadn't actually seen the movie. I haven't seen the movie but it's a great song anyway.
