This one's such an appalling combination they didn't even dare show a photograph of the finished product.

Good Housekeeping, 1935:

This is a mistake.

Gelatin, orange juice, orange sections, mayonnaise, whipped cream, and shrimp.

Woman's Day, 1943.

It was a long, long war.

Basically it's meatloaf. Made of cooked ground liver.

If anybody wants to know, Durkee's Dressing is apparently the same stuff that today is called Durkee Famous Sauce.

Life magazine, 1941 -- you know, I think that even back then this must have struck people as parodic at best.

Meatloafburgers dressed as lamb chops

It's the little paper frills that do it, I think.

If you're enjoying these unpleasant recipes, stop on by [livejournal.com profile] vintage_recipes , where we share many of yester-years' best! Some of our braver members even test the occasional recipe.

After all the unappealing recipe ads posted recently, how about one to cleanse the palate?

And remember the recipe for Cucumber Mousse that was posted a bit ago? You can watch me make it and taste if you want.

Woman's Home Companion, December 1952.

Oh yummy!  It's ... umm ...

objects.  On a plate.

I mean, at the far end I can identify what may be tomato wedges, and the substance closest to us is arguably creamed corn, but in between ... those could be fried green tomatoes, eggplant Parmegian, or sautéed drink-coasters for all of me.

Objects on a plate.

You know, this is one of the entries where I feel decidedly uncomfortable about adding the "food" tag as its so obviously an unconfirmed allegation.

The tomato ring doesn't even look like food, and blueberry muffins made with mayonnaise seem nasty.
