The tomato ring doesn't even look like food, and blueberry muffins made with mayonnaise seem nasty.

First of all : muffins with mayonnaise? Gag. But that Tuna-Tomato Ring looks like plastic. There's no way anything can be that solidly red and shiny and still be edible.

Mayonnaise ought never to be in the same sentence with blueberry muffins, let alone in the same recipe.

Neat that they encouraged reusing the jars, though, even after the war.

There is a recipie for these amazing waffles.

Instead of eggs and oil seperate, it calls for use of mayonaise. The waffles are still amazing.

I seem to remember Hellmann's running a serious ad campaign in the 80s featuring chocolate cake with mayo as its secret ingredient. The recipe is here: http://www.hellmanns.us/recipe_detail.aspx?RecipeID=2080&Version=1

I don't see anything wrong with using mayonnaise to bake. I mean, it's just eggs and oils, right? which you put into baking things anyway...

Yeah, this, like I said in my comment, I made a cake with mayo as a kid and it was fantastically good.

I'm going to (probably) be the odd one out and say that the mayonnaise muffins might be pretty good. The mayo would probably make them light and fluffy (I made a chocolate cake using mayo--instead of eggs and oil--when I was ten years old and it was frigging DELICIOUS). I mean it wouldn't be like you bit into the muffin and then SURPRISE!MAYONNAISE.

My grandma makes a really good chocolate mayo cake. It's so gross when she inexplicably uses Miracle Whip instead, though.

Well that's because Miracle Whip is inherently disgusting.

Now if you put a Boston-Creme-like filled center of mayonnaise in the muffins, it really would be SURPRISE!MAYONNAISE.

I had a wagon with wheels that looked exactly like that tomato ring.

At least we know they're freshly broken. Thank God for that.

At first I thought "Where's the tomato ring?," then saw that shiny red plastic-looking thing was the ring. Plus, muffins and mayo sound extremely unappetizing together.

I'm jumping on the "cook with mayo" wagon. It's all mixed up in there, so I don't think it would bother me.

I really want to make tomato aspic someday. If I do, I will inflict the pictures upon all of you. :P

Other than to make it stand out against the white background, I wonder why the mayo in the jars is tinted yellow.

To make it look "richer", I think.

And damn is that some shiny glossy highly polished tomato aspic.

I have favourite versions of many things, but my favourite tomato aspic is not one of them.

I am about to make those muffins, but with cranberries instead of blueberries. Will post the results....

Here's the result:

I used whole wheat flour, and a lower-fat variety of mayonnaise. The verdict is they are very moist and have an excellent consistency. However, the flavour is rather bland. I would use this recipe as a base again, but would add spices to give the flavour some much-needed oomph. I would also add more fruit.

if you go to http://www.hellmans.us and click on 'recipes' and then 'desserts' from the pull-down menu, you'll find tons more, including CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES.

maybe i'm being affected by all the recent ads, but maybe perhaps that red, dog-bowl-looking thing could be tomato gelatin? i'm not personally familiar with such a thing, but it would also not surprise me (for the time, at least).

That tomato ring looks the worst so far.

Also, I'll bet you anything that they thought to use whole eggs in the mayo because then the ingredients are *cheaper* than when using egg yolks only.
