yes, we still have contest voting going on....let's vote through next wednesday and i'll post the winner thursday.....vote here and be sure to weigh in on what you want january's contest to be please! and then the day after xmas---which is a Hall & Oates Day!! I will post our contestants for ad of the year and we'll vote on that through new year's eve and the WINNER will be declared new year's day---how's that sound??

someone messaged me awhile ago that ads were cut off when they viewed ads on the vintage ads page, but the ads viewed fine on the comment page for them....i had no problem at all until i went to tally finalists for our contest and i saw the same thing....is this happening for anyone else?? i usually only view v. ads on my friend's list....so if you do too, could you please go to our regular page and let me know if ads are cut off for you and maybe let me know what browser you are using as sometimes it is browser specific.....i might have to change the v. ads journal style.....

if you missed my mod post last night, here's a link to the lj news post where they mention upcoming changes to the comments---from what i have gathered they are going to do away with the subject box...it's apparent LJ doesn't particularly care about it's users, but let's not be passive and if you not yet voiced your opinion on this, please add to the chorus of 'please keep the subject box in comments' on this post here....and yes, of course, if you want them gone with, please comment as such---but i have to ask, are they that intrusive? can you just ignore them?? why do the majority have to suffer??

NOW....many people have mentioned DREAMWIDTH and some of you have generously offered me an invite code....i THOUGHT someone had given me an invite code when they were sort of new....i tried to log in today and uh, yeah...i DO have an account...created 5/5/2009!! never updated....i have no invites to give anyone though...how do you get invites?? i DID create a vintage ads community on dreamwidth as several of you have suggested.....now i have done nothing with it...haven't picked a journal style, nothing.....i will do that in the next couple weeks, but i would like to make it clear that THIS community will always be here---until LJ decides it doesn't want us anymore!!! but if you have a dreamwidth and want to join the community over there, please do...i have been told you can cross post here on LJ when you post there.....we can maybe figure this out together.....i know some of you have dreamwidth accounts and have been very helpful so i hope you can help me out here and some others who might want to get an account and be able to cross post to LJ's vintage_ads....

our new rule.....post about it here.....i read all the feedback, the PMs, the emails, and no one tracked me down at home, though did someone stopped by yesterday? thought i heard a knock....haha...sorry....anyway....this rule will be revisited february 1st....i know i said a month...but let's give it to february 1st....

i think the feedback was about 50/50...what i would like to say is that i spent a lot of time thinking about this before i made the rule....i mean, aside from the usual 'who likes rules?'....i AGREE with the people who say that this is a slippery slope....and i agreed with many other people who spoke eloquently why they were against the rule.....BUT whereas i can agree with many of those who are against it, i AGREE and can empathize and understand where the people who requested it are coming from and i wish to be sensitive to our members when they make, what i feel, is a reasonable request.....i admit with this rule and the 50/50 for/against i'm in an awkward position but i still feel it is reasonable and as i said we will revisit this and have another discussion and see if it's working, if not, why, should we modify it, discontinue it, are people avoiding posting ads because of it, etc and i might even do a poll for it....

we have a very diverse community here....when racist ads are posted, no one ever posts that they are FOR them, the comments are always just shock that such ads were ever acceptable, we have discussions on how times have changed, history of the times, we help educate our members from other countries who are not familiar with the racism we have had in this country, etc....

i hope that members will please, even if they disagree with the rule, use a cut for blatantly racist ads that depict people in stereotypical physical ways and in speech---this is not just for african americans, but also asian americans, native americans, etc...your cut language just has to say something like 'racist ad behind cut'....only blatantly racist ads....and yes, i understand that what is blatant to someone isn't blatant to another...that is one of the reasons why we will revisit this february 1st...i would not want ALL ads that take the 'racism' tag behind the cut, as i feel that in a way, would be a disservice....believe me, i do NOT want to be the PC police.....i am trying to be a good mod and i am trying to be sensitive to people and i truly believe it is a reasonable request---yes, even though i can agree with many who are against it....i think too much and can see both sides of things.....

Our Holiday Ads Contest STARTS TOMORROW December 1st!!! Here's our rules....yes, the standard general rule post.....

1. Defining Holiday Ads: Any December holiday! Yule, Solstice, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Santa, mass consumerism, etc....any questions, just ask!

2. Hall & Oates: Yes, of course the Fiero ad can be submitted, if it's not something is terribly broken in this community...the Fiero is red, right? that makes it festive...and we just had the Canada Dry Hall & Oates Pontiac ad, that should be submitted too! WE MUST KEEP THE PATRON SAINTS OF VINTAGE ADS HAPPY!!!!!!!

3. All ads MUST comply with all regular rules---except, only one ad per post!!! so ads must be embedded (youtube & print ads are fine), ads must be 1991 and before, etc...please read the rules on our community info page and remember, just one ad per post for entries...

4. ALL entries must have at least 'contest' in the subject...if it doesn't say at least 'contest', then i won't count votes!

5. voting....you vote via a YES in the comments....you can put it in the subject of the comments, you can put it in the body of the comments....you can write an essay on the ad and then at the end put a 'yes'...but there must be a YES in the comments to count as a vote...no, i'm not even bolding it or changing the font color this time...it does no good....

6. regular ads are of course accepted!

7. you'd think i'd have a template rule post to use so i didn't sit here thinkering uh, what's the other rule? is there another?? but alas, no....i haven't done that and i don't think there's another rule....oh wait, HAVE FUN!!! :D

no one gave any feedback about January.....winter ads?? that's a repeat from last january but is that okay? or do you want me to pick a few selections from the cup and vote on a different topic?? February is JELLO!!!!

and after we select the winner of holiday ads, we are going to have an 'ad of the year' vote! where all winners will face each other!! there definitely needs to be a prize for ad of the year...like a tangible prize....what should it be?? ideas??

programming note: i am sick...i have the flu....i told the flu to fuck the fuck off yesterday so it actually got worse today (note to self, do not tell the flu off, it doesn't like that!!)...i hope to be better tomorrow, but i WILL be checking the mod queue, but perhaps not hourly, perhaps every 2 hours instead of every waking hour, so please be patient.....and on friday if i am well enough i have a boat load of errands to run and will not be home much of the day, so hang tight queue wise, i'll check it right before i leave and then right when i get home (well after i unload perishables....)....

yes our car ad contest started today, great start thus far!!!

i posted the rules for the contest yesterday ON THIS POST PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ IT as i added a couple rules and we are having 2 contests concurrently---video and print ads.....

PLEASE read the rules!!! i am sick and it would help me out greatly.....

and a reminder----i am in the states and i am on eastern standard time.....once again i got a pithy message from someone wondering why i hadn't approved their post at 5am when they put it in the moderation queue (it was the middle of the night for them too, but i guess i'm suppose to be available 24/7? )......i sleep at night....i check the mod queue before i turn off the computer (usually 11-11:30pm) and i check it first thing when i get up---which is uh, well it varies, especially when i'm feeling like crap.....and i check it at least hourly during waking hours when we have a contest, i really try to stay on top of it!!

so PLEASE be patient and please refrain from sending a pithy message---especially in the middle of the night.....and please read the rules so i don't have to retype them when i reject ads.....

here's a silly five alive juice commercial---do they still make this?? it's funny they're passing around glasses of juice in the office to revive the one lady....one summer i worked at an office and around 3:30pm the women would pass around a bottle of white out to inhale to give them a 'lift' to last til 5pm!!! and I was the college student and had zero idea what they were doing!!! yeah juice, much safer to pass around.....

I just updated the rules....I am also going through the members and if I recognize a name who posts a lot and they are still moderated, I am making them 'unmoderated' (i can do that when I approve posts for moderation but I usually hit the button automatically before i check the box to make their future posts unmoderated) and removing people who no longer have a LJ.....

As i mention in the tag section, i'm making a 'retired ads' tag and will be placing ads that have been posted ad naseum under that tag---i'll post when that project is done.....

Vintage_Ads Community Rules

1. All posts MUST include an embedded ad, be it a print or video ad. Ads must be 1991 and before. (20 year rule is in effect, in 2012, ads must be 1992 and before, etc) You may include a link to a site with additional ads (provided it is not a site with ads for sale--no commercial links please), or to a site with more information about a product. But NO POSTS WITH ONLY A LINK. You may also include a photograph of the product if you personally own it and it is an interesting object. Personal commentary is always welcome and that does not need to be behind a cut.

Also: No hotlinking. Use your own picture hosting site to upload the ads.

We DO have tags---I am working on fixing them and expanding them---please feel free to use them! I am also going to be adding a tag 'retired ads' with our most posted ads (i'll post when that project is done) for ads that are to be permanently retired!

2. LJ Cuts are at the POSTER’S discretion with these exceptions:

a) The ad has blatant nudity and is NSFW
b) There are more than 3 ads in the post
c) The ad is absolutely humongous

Commenters are NOT to request a LJ Cut or any alteration to a post. If a member has an issue with a post, they are to contact ME misstiajournal with their concern and I will determine if any action should be taken with the post. Why? Because we had issues in the long long ago where certain members of the community tried to dictate how the community should look based on other communities and it created an atmosphere were members did not feel comfortable posting. This is not other communities, this is vintage ads.

If a commenter leaves a comment requesting you, as a poster do something, please ignore them and contact me. I do read through the comments several times a day, but the sooner I am aware of something, the sooner I can handle something.

3. There is ZERO TOLERANCE for discrimination, hate, intolerance, etc in this community. ZERO TOLERANCE. We are all individuals of different races, genders, beliefs, etc and we are all EQUAL HERE (as we should be everywhere). I will not tolerate ANY comments of any kind against anyone’s sexual orientation, religious beliefs, handicaps, etc. If an ad makes you want to leave a comment based on hate---go to your own LJ and make a post, do not post it in this community or you will be banned.

Many vintage ads portray how far we have come as a society. If you are personally offended by an ad, please CONTACT ME. There have been several instances where ads have been removed due to their offensiveness, please do not feel you cannot contact me if you are offended by an ad, you can!

We have many conversations in the comments discussing race in ads, even the word ‘gay’ in ads, also the sexist portrayal of women in ads from the 50s. We are all adults and these conversations are 99% of the time enlightening. If someone starts to inject hate, please contact me immediately!

If you are personally attacked in the comments, if you can (and I understand it might be difficult to do, but please try), do not respond and contact me immediately and I will deal with it!

4. It is A-okay if conversations in the comments stray off topic. It’s been mentioned before where some people don’t think it’s allowed, it is!! Have fun!!!!!

ONLY PRINT ADS, because starting April 15th, after we've voted on a winner from the print ads, we will have contest #2, for Celebs in COMMERCIALS 1970-1979

for the first contest....let's go over the rules:

all regular vintage ads posting rules apply...these can be found on the user info page for the group....(though i suggest only posting one ad per post for contests!!)

only PRINT ADS for the first contest....NO youtube ads AT ALL....and ONLY ads from 1970-1979....and they MUST have a celeb in them....if they don't have a imdb.com page, then let's say they aren't a celeb....

please put CONTEST ENTRY, or at least CONTEST in the subject...if you do not do that, i will NOT look for votes in that entry...i usually will comment and ask the poster to please put contest or contest entry in the subject of an ad that fits the parameters of the theme, but do not count on me being a nanny, i've never changed a diaper in my life, so i don't think i'm quite qualified as a nanny...

to VOTE for a contest entry, in the comments, please put a YES if you would like the entry to go to the finals....that's it, just a YES....that is all that counts as a vote....if you put 'i like this ad', that does not count as a vote, only a YES counts as a vote....you may vote for your own entry and you may vote on every single entry if you wish....

some posters' submissions are moderated....please be patient and realize that i sleep (can't mod in my sleep and no, i'll never forget the pithy message i got from a member taking me to task for not putting through their moderated post at 3am and they were even in the same time zone as me....) and i sometimes leave my house.....when we have a contest i REALLY vigilantly try to check the queue at least every hour...LJ seems to have fixed the notification system, but just in case, i will still check the queue hourly during WAKING hours.....if i have to leave my house for any length of time i will post stating i will gone for a bit---just so y'all know and i don't come home to pithy messages....yes, i am still irked by that person's message....(and on the evening of April 5th i am going to see Charlie Sheen...so i'll be out WINNING that night! :)

during the contest other ads are welcome!! if you don't want to participate in the contest you don't have too....please feel free to post non-contest related ads, including youtube ads!
