Harvey Comics had plans to publish 72 New Kids on the Block comic books a year, and this is how you could get them all! Of course, they never met that ambitious goal -- I wonder how many subscriptions they sold, and then had to refund?

Today would have been Michael Hutchence's 59th birthday.

Not from Kick, but the song and video that really made them famous in the states. Damn he had charisma.

A day or two ago, my local community radio station played a Bowie/Tina Turner song and mentioned this commercial. I'd forgotten all about this ad!

Get up, see Chris Cornell trending and WHAT?! NO!!! FUCK!!! Now, once again, I sit here in tears for someone I never met personally but who had a profound affect on my life. Badmotorfinger was on repeat for about a year when it came out in my apartment. Any song from that makes me smell the black cherry candles I was always burning and sandalwood incense.

Soundgarden was part of my college soundtrack. This song always played when The Loft was closing and it always makes me envision sitting at a table with friends littered with empty pitchers, glasses, and singing along, drunkenly, of course.

My favorite Bowie music video-all 20 minutes of it:

In addition to today being Bowiemas, it also marks the birthday of someone whose career in the music industry was every bit as significant to me, and I don't mean Elvis. Bill Graham would have been 86, had he not been killed in a helicopter crash returning home from the Concord Pavilion in 1991.

David Bowie at Winterland, 1972David Bowie’s first Bay Area show was a Halloween event at Winterland in San Francisco on Oct. 25, 1972. The show flopped, with only a few hundred people buying tickets to see the young British performer. Bill Graham talked Bowie into returning in February 1976, and that became the first of many successful appearances here. --Bill Van Niekerken in the San Francisco Chronicle, Jan 11 2016

Bill Graham PresentsHis tale is the stuff of legends: a Jew born in Germany in 1931 and orphaned soon after, he was evacuated to France in 1939 and sent to the U.S. in 1941. He lived with a foster family in the Bronx, working as a waiter and cabbie until he found his calling as a rock impresario in 1960s San Francisco. Notoriety and controversy followed--for the next quarter century, he had a hand in everything from the Trips Festival to the Fillmore West to Woodstock to Live Aid to Amnesty International's Conspiracy of Hope tour. This look at a businessman unencumbered by timidity is recommended reading as an often hilarious overview of rock 'n' roll. --from the Publishers Weekly review of Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Out

Fuck Marry Kill: Bon Jovi, John Lennon, Jim Morrison

Choose 1 to fuck, 1 to marry and 1 to kill and comment with your response ... rationalizations and explanations are welcome, of course, and to echo Miss Tia's earlier comment, you don't need to say "fuck" if you don't want to, you can say screw or fornicate or make sweet tender love or just plain "F"

I love both these movies...

Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979)

PJ Soles! Clint Howard! Paul Bartel! Mary Woronov! and the Ramones!

Truth be told it's pretty crummy when the Ramones are offscreen. But when they are onscreen, it's fantastic, even if they were lipsynching. (Or when DeeDee was trying to act.)

Fact: according to the commentary track, the Ramones had never heard of lipsynching before this. "You mean the Beatles weren't really singing in A Hard Day's Night?"

I totally recommend the DVD, both for the ability to skip to all the Ramones parts and also for the commentary which is hilarious and informative for fans of the Ramones and Roger Corman movies.

Huge poster:

click to embiggen. I wanted to buy this poster @ a poster shop in NY and the guy wouldn't sell it to me because it was cheesy. :P

And... because this movie is like Rock 'n' Roll High School only serious. And both are really dated, but that's OK! Nice soundtracks too...

Pump up the Volume (1990)

Christian Slater! I love this movie so much.

Sadly, stuff like this made the song a bit of a cliche, but, hey, we all got bills to pay.

RIP, Joe Cocker.
