Weldon Pajamas, 1960

There's a whole lotta what the? in this ad:

1. Do we need the sign the kids are holding? Is that vital info?
2. I hope Dad's not a greeting card writer or ad exec, because that's a terrible Valentine pun.
3. FREE TOPRITER EXECUTIVE PEN WITH EVERY PAIR - because when I think PJs, I think a pen is what's missing.
4. Where did golden blonde Suzy come from?  Let's not ask.
5. "Send your favorite family greetings they'll long remember" - I'm supposed to give these to other people?
6. "Pajamas for the Entire Family" is their corporate motto and logo.  Talk about niche marketing.
7. They're sold in So. Africa, Venezuela, Italy and other countries, randomly.
8. Teen girls' and Prep boys' sizes not shown because then it wouldn't be a nuclear family.

Not since the matchy-matchy Christmas PJs (also a Weldon product) have I seen such a thing.

In addition to all that, I don't think I'd wear those pajamas on a bet.

(Unless it was Valentine's Day and I had a special date with a guy who had a sense of humor...)

I guess I can't argue with a free pen.

Matching pajamas would make me feel too much like the Osmonds or something...

I wonder if this was still the era when people were being trained to think of VD as a spending destination? that would explain the kids' sign.

Well I still forget when mother's day is, so perhaps that's the market it's aimed at - forgetful.

A redhead and someone with dark hair can produce blond offspring. /random.

Also, hey, free pen! Totally worth buying a pair and burning hiding them in a closet.

Yes, I was interested to note that. I feel it is a failure of nuclear familyhood - son matches Dad (he'll darken up with age) but daughter corrects the awful fail of black hair with her golden locks. I call shenanigans. She's his byblow with that trashy blonde down the road.

Exactly! My mom had dark-brown hair and eyes and my dad was sandy blond with hazel eyes and my sister and I were both blue-eyed blondes. :)

My (natural) hair color: brownish with a red cast in the sunlight. His hair color: deep brown, almost black. We both have brown eyes. Our son? Born with white-blond hair and bright blue eyes. It happens. :)

Those pajamas, however, should never have happened. Even if a free pen IS involved.

My aunt was blonde as a child (my grandmother was blonde, grandfather dark-haired), but her hair darkened to brown by her teens. Her husband is a darker redhead.

Their daughter? Born with white blonde hair that's darkened to more of a gold now that she's in her teens.

My parents both have dark brown hair, but both my brothers were born with white-gold hair. They, just like my mom (who was a blond baby), saw their hair darken as they got older. One is still a sandy light brown, but the other's hair is as dark as mine.

i'm sorry... my mind keeps automatically removing the space between "pen" and "is" in everyone's comments, and everything is so much funnier.

The pen is, mightier than the sword.

I confess to being a great fan of novelty pajamas (my current favorites have monkeys and bananas on a sky blue background). But I'm not quite getting the Valentine theme. The Christmas ones make sense, because opening the Santa gifts first thing in the morning is a formal ritual that is often performed in sleepwear. But I don't know quite why the whole family is lounging together on Valentine's Day. That said, I can totally imagine my mom coming up with something like this as a Valentine for us kids, which was in the mid 1960s. And it solves the sticky issue of "equal" presents for all siblings.

Why do the mom and girl get short sleeves but the dad and boy get long? To cover their manly muscles? Or...?

I'd wear the pajamas, myself, without the matching entourage.
