Over at Retronaut they are showcasing some cool old Radiation posters from 1947.

“These posters were produced at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1947. Their purpose was to remind personnel of radiation safety practices and also to let them know what the term “Health Physics” meant, i.e. radiation protection. In 1947 the term was only 4 years old and no less confusing then than now.”

Let's hope this photo was doctored to emphasize the message.  "Cover your cough" is the same message given today, along with "Sneeze into your arm".

An early exemplar of the "how our product works INSIDE you" graphic, this comes from the 19th century, the UK, and the glorious time when quack remedies were abundant.

Read a brief history of medicinal creosote HERE.  These days, it's used to preserve railroad ties, but back then it did everything, even "cure toothaches like magic".  I also love the old pricing.

One of the more popular styles of this era (and one of my favorites) is showing the inner workings of the human body, the flow of medications, or as George Lois put it,  ""the witless, nasty, sinus and nasal passages world of over the counter pharmaceutical advertising".   Here is Coldene's (often repeated) description of five ways that colds attack.

The anatomical aspect of these ads is endlessly fascinating.  I'll try to uncover some others.

Schirdewan was a schnapps brewery in Breslau (Poland), widely distributed, naturally, in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).  The low quality printing and colors are not age, but quite typical of the GDR in that era; the paper was coarse and the ink used sparingly.   The ad itself is a bit jumbled from a design standpoint, but I love it for its little rhyme and for its rarity.

Schirdewan, 1950s

"Fühlst Du die böse Grippe nah'n, trink einen Grog von Schirdewan!"

"If you feel the evil flu coming on, drink a grog from Schirdewan!"  The medicine being added is not specified.

[Disclaimer: I don't know if 1992 is old enough, but that's when this commercial is from. I was actually looking for an older one from the 70s that I remember; I believe Didi Conn was talking with her trademark cute nasal voice, but I couldn't find it on YouTube.]

Here a guy in an India tube station takes a Hall's cough drop and is immediately hit with a snowball lobbed by a polar bear.
