ME too....I thought she had a cold. But the text instantly jumps to constipation and gastritis?! Huh? Not a very effective advert!

I woke up with a cold this morning. Believe you me, a laxative is nowhere on my list of medications to get for this puppy.

KERCHOO!

How in the hell is a laxative going to help with a cold? If this stuff is anything like Citrate of Magnesia though it might help with your cough. One dose & you'll be afraid to cough!

She won't be in bed during the race, she'll be stuck in the Ladies Room! I thought the purging cure-all was a Victorian thing.

I don't understand!

(However, the idea of a laxative working in an hour is appealing. TMI.)

You know how in Georgian times they thought a bleeding would cure all ills? Well I think in this time they thought a poopoing was the cure.

Everybody was obsessed with their bowels!

Excellent ad.

I think we still kind of are. New year and spring all the women's magazine start writing about detoxing and juice fasting, they try to avoid talking to much about the colon, but it is essentially the same believe. Maybe I have warped perspective because I am still subscribed to the Goop newsletter (long story) and Ms. Gwyneth Paltrow definitely seems to think that cleaning out your poor colon will heal you from all that ails to you. Some things haven't changed from the 50s.

Mrs Jim has lost all personal identity as she is now property of her husband. Thus Miss Jane Smith becomes Mrs Jim Thompson.

I know that. I hate, hate, hate it so much but I thought I'd make a joke rather than another angry rant. How did women put up with that crap?

It was a different time! Women didn't have the opportunities they do now. Snagging a good man was something to be proud of, and being called Mrs. Whatever was sort of a status symbol, I would guess. It's hard to look at it through today's eyes and not feel resentment, but again, it was a different time.

From this page (http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T168799.html):

"Most of the mucous from the respiratory tract is swallowed and waste to be expelled from this mucous makes its way to the colon. During an illness like a cold, viral particles remain in quantity in the colon. The gentle washing away of the bulk of this material allows the immune system to focus on the respiratory tract rather than maintain a second larger front in the colon. This is one reason why almost all doctors in the preantibiotic era recommended enemas, or at the least laxatives, for colds. The use of enemas gives immediate relief of symptoms and helps to concentrate the immune response where it is needed."

But it's not recommended today, as far as I know...which leads me to think that this is probably bunk.

Yes for making stuff up. Using saline when you have a cold makes since - if you use it to flush your SINUSES! I do that all the time, but since when is saline a laxative?

Also, I don't use one of those Netipots. I just took the injector syringe that came with a bottle of Tony Cachere's marinade (without the needle, of course!!!) and it works great with a bit of salt water. Seriously, it works great to flush out the congestion, kind of like a nose enema to put it bluntly. I even called into a talk radio show to recommend it! :D

"Sal hepatica" sounds like the name of a font.
