So in 1948, Peggy got Jim a Hamilton watch, and wrote this lovely note to go with. It's a treasure-trove for anthropologists (and perhaps for therapists). I'm not sure which "for" is the most unsettling.

But between the mind-blowing text and the garish painting (ymmv), I'm queasy. Seriously, read the text. Stiff-upper-lip Brit-speak and quaint sexism and ... something else vague and indefinable and terrifying. Like that picture. D:
The artwork (John Lawrence) depicts a true story: "an illustration from a wood engraving and lino cut of
the famous rescue by Grace Darling and her father of 13 people from the wreck of the SS Forfarshire in 1838."
