It says it can be used for explosives... o_O Who knew? I wonder if you would ship it off to someone, or if a person came around to your house collecting kitchen grease?
I know my mom and grandparents had special canisters for savin gthe kitchen grease, but I have no idea what they actually did with it. This was up through the early 80's, so it must have been mostly residual habits?
My mother did as well. She kept it under the kitchen sink. I don't know that I ever saw her use it for anything, though - I think it was more to have a place to pour used grease until she threw it away. You can't pour that stuff down the sink drain.
In fact, once as a kid I decided to cook something for everybody, and I used THAT grease in place of the shortening that was in the cabinet. Fortunately, I proudly explained to my mother where I'd gotten the ingredients before we ate it, so she knew what was going on and nobody ate the week-old bacon grease-filled meal. I was devastated that we couldn't taste my wonderful creation, but I definitely learned something.
Yeah, I always thought it was only kept back to fry other foods later, like my grandmother did. First time I've heard that it was for explosives, too. Although, given how grease burns, I suppose it makes sense in hindsight.
I strain my bacon fat through coffee filters and use it in green beans and in white sauce. I keep it stored in a jar in the fridge. My husband's grandmother always saved her grease to make soap.
