It's widely considered one of the worst Disney animated movies, but I remember enjoying it!

Yes. I remember it because we saw all such fantasy movies at the time and enjoyed the story mainly because it wasn't based on a familiar fairy tale, and so I didn't know the plot beforehand. I see that it's based on a book series, but had never read them, so there you go.

The books were quite good YA fantasy novels and Disney put a lot of work into this but I think it's considered the low point of Disney animation before they made their comeback with Little Mermaid and it might have nearly sunk Disney Animation.

it was an interesting one. I recall the producers went berserk when they found out how dark the movie was turning out though.
