Please help with our Vintage Ads events calendar.....

I have our events calendar filled out thru the end of May....here's what we have thru then (see my post before this for the next 5 days of events).....

April 24 - 26 Weekend Event TV Ads

May

May 1 - 3 Weekend Events Ads mentioning May and Hideous Food

May 4, Monday, ONE DAY EVENT Vietnam Era/Peace ads (it is the 45th anniversary of the Kent State Shootings)

May 5, Tuesday, Contest starts, theme is Perfume/Cologne AND ONE DAY EVENT for Cinco de Mayo--Mexican ads

May 8 - 10 Weekend Event Ads featuring boobs and butts

May 15 - 17 Weekend Events Ads for Sea Life and Ads that have bubbles/froth/foam in them

May 18 Monday, ONE DAY EVENT, It's Victoria Day in Canada so ads with Queen Victoria!

May 22 - 24 Weekend Events Civil War ads, ads from the Civil War period, ads that reference the Civil War, ads for items about the Civil War, basically any ad Civil War related

May 25 Monday, ONE DAY EVENT, BBQ ads

May 29 - 31 Weekend Event 1940s Ads and Errors in Ads

NOW.....i have jotted down a plethora of event ideas.....please give feedback, PLEASE give me suggestions of your own ideas and definitely PLEASE tell me which ones should/could be contest worthy.....i have denoted the ones i think could be contest-able, only 2---need MORE but i wasn't sure about what others could be for a contest....if something is for a specific day, i'll denote that.....i'm giving you all my ideas cuz i like to ensure everyone is included in decisions here....

zombie apocalypse--ads involving zombies and/or what you'd need in case of one

ads that you can make up dialogue for (you know, the ones with characters perhaps with a strange glint in their eye)

addressses in ads i'd have with something else on a weekend...that's a 'niche' one but when we did it before it was rather fun....i can concur, we have sort of overdone musicians in ads....we've done sports people in ads and just saying 'celebs' is sort of trite....hmmm....how about famous blondes? famous people with mustaches? something along those lines?

we've never had a weekend devoted to douche & constipation ads---and douche of course could apply to people ;) we've never done a PB & Jelly weekend...we've done gardening and that would have to be with something else as there's not many ads---i admit that's one that's a personal preference on my part as i like gardening....

when we do specifically beautiful artwork we get some great examples---though yes, we can see that every day.....i think we did seniors in ads before a few years back.....ads tend to be geared towards youth---the ideal advertising market, etc so i felt they should be included since they're rather forgotten by marketing.....

I'm so new to the site that most of these are fine with me. Not so sure about floating heads, weapons, or zombie apocalypse, but I can go with mostly anything.

I think you do a fabulous job keeping us well supplied with ideas and gentle motivation. Kudos to you and your efforts!

Thank you and with a couple exceptions I've felt very welcomed here. It's fun to meet up and chat with folks who love old ads as much as I do. They get a bit tired of me yammering about it in my communities or journal! I just love them so and it's nice to have a place that embraces them.

You'll be proud of me - I even recognized a hot link and removed it before posting. Even this old dog is learning new tricks.

Ah, thank you! That's what makes this such a great place. You give all of us the warm fuzzies of empowerment.

I take care of the exceptions by ignoring them. It's amazing how well it works and how rarely they get 'it' or the big picture.

why i wonder for floating heads for a contest is that it's so specific---do you think people would have a problem with that? i know it'll be fun, but i dunno if people will have a problem with it--thoughts?

I think flooding heads will be a little bit more difficult but I think it would be a really fun contest and there are quite a few -- we could include floating hands and whatever else -disembodied body parts?

Def enough pens pencils and stationery together.

Women's hats, hairstyles, floating heads, and the mad libs ads are my favorite suggestions.

As a corollary to the nighttime thing a sleepwear/pajama party one might be fun.

no of course not, nor states, i can/will use them as filler on weekend events for ones that might not have a lot.....or just always have 2 to select from.....well wait, technically we have done all the colors....i think we did most of the alphabet...we can always redo those!! :)

which ones do you think would make a good contest from above? what is your feedback on floating heads for a contest? should we also include floating hands/other parts or just keep it floating heads? the more i think about it, the more i think it should just be floating heads----to avoid confusion.....

Your right it should just be floating heads. That will have ample amount of ads. Having anything else would ultimately become Heads vs Hands.

I liked many of your suggestions above. They all were worthy of contests. It been my experience that there are a lot of ads out there on even the most obscure topics.

With that said, obscure topics can be great. Some times a topics, like cars, will have too many contest entries. I personally find it hard to follow along with a contest when there are umpteen pages of contest entries.


If you would like I can pull out my top 10. But I really like your list.

I have been thinking, and maybe we talked about this, that we should do a now and then.

Ads side by side, to see how things have changed over the years. Restrict it to just two, so we don't have a post that contains ever coca cola ad in history.

i agree about 'wide' themed contests, but sometimes that gets people posting who don't usually post....i also don't want to make them too niche either, ya know? but like cars from the 1950s is always feasible.....narrow it down a bit.....


i would like your ideas for what would/could make contest themes, we still need a few more for the next few months --starting in june.....aside the aforementioned---and the ones denoted on my list, i think canned foods would be okay as a theme---i might have denoted that, i can't scroll up as i clicked the link from my email and i just have your comment!!

if something is 'broad' we can always narrow it down via decade or hell, we could do so by color! only BLUE vehicles! ---we're not having a car contest anytime soon, that's just an example....

have we had a rain contest? i know we had a weekend weather event before and i know snow ads....how would/could we narrow it down? what about just a weekend of rain gear?

we just had moon ads earlier this month as someone suggested it for the blood moon....

ooo....different meat....i like that....fish....we could file chicken away too!! could that be a contest though? i'm thinking we might get stuck with lots of tuna ads? let's think about that for a contest theme.....

We could also have like Harvest in the fall? We have a lot Farm ads. It could be Farming/Harvest.

I remember the ad that one It was like a naked lady in a clear rain coat. lol. We could have Sun and Fun. Or Windy weekend.

I was thinking Fish as in Tropical, or pets. lol But the chicken and other foods is pretty cool too!

Yes. I know there will be some great hats ones. May 15 is Straw hat day in Boston. Men would hang up thier felts, and where their Straws.

that's funny! i believe you're right----that influenced this past weekend!! i did discover though there's a national nude day, so we'll have a nude day in vintage ads that day! :) july 14th in case you're wondering.....
