It may not be aimed at mankind, but it has effects on us: it destroys the ozone layer (http://www.epa.gov/ozone/mbr/qa.html). It's been "banned" (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/07/methyl-bromide-ban-has-al_n_952380.html) in California, but there are exemptions to that ban. The big one is pre-planting soil fumigation for strawberries (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/05/17/152522900/the-secret-life-of-californias-world-class-strawberries). The battle over its use has been going on a long time.
