Why add mayo? Duh! You add mayo to savory stuff in aspic, you add whipped cream or cottage cheese to sweet stuff in aspic. What else!

I an a mid-50's baby and I ate a LOT of stuff in aspic when I was young, but I don't think I ever ate anything quite this .... Odd. Mom mostly stuck to sweet stuff.

Yeah, the craziest my mom got was lime Jello with celery and carrots in it (with mayo). Though I'm a mid-70s baby so maybe I missed the worst of it.

We actually did something similar last year at Halloween as part of our "mad science" display - I threw a bunch of creepy-crawly toys in a bowl with unflavored gelatin and it looked super-weird.
