Thanks for that! I knew most of that but it is the origin has me intrigued. In the wikipedia entry for the watermelon fruit it says "Southern food historian John Egerton has said he believes African slaves helped introduce the watermelon to the United States." And the genus originates from Africa, so there might be some linkage there?
When I was a kid, they used to run a movie called Watermelon Man on TV a lot, but it's probably considered too controversial now or too old. I don't remember a lot about it, but it's about a racist white guy who overdoes it with the tanning lamps and becomes black. Yeah, not very plausible, but it was supposed to be a social commentary because the guy lost his job, his wife left him, etc. Anyway, it's an example of the connection between watermelon and racist stereotypes of African Americans is pretty well established.
A little bit except for the bare ass part since I only saw the edited-for-television version. If I ever subscribe to the DVD side of Netflix again, I should rent it. I doubt I would find this at Redbox.
I wonder what this is actually selling. I'm guessing some sort of booze, but why is it called "Ginger." Is it ginger ale? I'm trying to view this from an objective marketing standpoint, and to me this image suggest that this would be a really cheap booze that poor blacks would give their kids. I can't see how that would be a selling point unless that was actually your market. (shudders in horror)
