The thought that came to my mind when I saw all that food was "doomsday preppers," which means they would have their own generators.
I remember my grandma had two huge chest freezers in the garage and an upright in her utility room. They were always full of food and it was just her and Grandpa and then just her except at the holidays.
I'd love an upright freezer like that. I have the chest type and it's such a pain to dig stuff out of there. Mine isn't even very big.
granny had two HUGE chest freezers, too. and one was frozen goodies (cinnamon rolls, kolaches, cookies) and ice cream. i can remember leaning over with my feet off the floor digging for my favorite flavor of ice cream in the summer, and granny ALWAYS bought 4-6 gallons of it in the winter.
KOLACHES! Gawd, I miss those! Well, when I don't make them myself. Well, at least we have Blue Bell here now.
You know, the weird thing was that my Grandma was 100% Czech ancestry, but I never knew her to make kolaches or even speak about them. Marrying a man of German descent will do that. He was fourth generation, too, but you'd think he had immigrated here as a child or something. So my Grandma made only German or American food. She could make a mean sauerkraut.
granny made godawful amounts of cinnamon rolls and kolaches at easter and christmas. and when i say godawful amounts? the whole 10 food long table would be COVERED in baked goods. ones rising before being put in the oven, ones cooling, ones being frosted, ones letting the frosting harden before being packaged up or frozen. it would be a 2-3 day affair! absolutely amazing, it was. :D
do you do the fruit kolaches (indent in the middle of the dough and fruit filling put in) or the ones that have sausages rolled up in them? cause they make that type down here and i was like "WTF?"
I've done both kinds and also with cream cheese filling (nom nom!) but I know the fruit filling is more traditional. I still like the sausage kind, though, and I'm not even a big fan of sausage.
Dang! I really need to bake some. It's finally getting cool enough here now that I can start running the oven more.
If I had the investment capital to open a kolache shop here in Charlotte I would. Most people here have never heard of them unless they have lived in or been to Texas.
My grandmother had the freezer. Crosley had the patent for putting shelves on the inside of the door. Before that, they were just flat ... doors. While the patent was in force, nobody else could make a refrigerator with shelving on the doors, and the "Shelvador" feature was a big selling point.

Date: 2013-10-03 07:35 am (UTC)I despise grocery shopping, and only do it once a month, or even less. I'm all about buying in bulk and stocking up.
Besides, zombie apocalypse. Just sayin'.
