I actually like the area rug, but I think it belongs some other room. I love the approach of homes like this, they make the backyard 'the view' and turn it into a private little oasis accessible only to the occupants. Pity they made you go sit in the corner to watch TV, though. Oh well, all of that was new and they didn't yet realize TV is meant to take over your life.
Homes in this style generally have a wall of side by side by side picture windows looking out at the backyard. This one has a sunken living room, but they do not feel subterranean.
A lot of this is a reflection of the architecture trend of the time. You're seeing Mid-century Modernism and coming up was Brutalism. It was a killer. I work in one. This is tame compared what we would see in the 60's. My building is all concrete. All 6 floors feel like a basement. We teach a whole class at the design school I work at, it would take me 4 months to explain it all. This was a poor synopsis.
The one I'm most familiar with also had a pitched ceiling over this room, high in the center and lowering to a more intimate level by the rear windows. It kept it cozy without being claustrophobic.
