I was trying to figure out the connection, too. I can't figure out the thing with the dogs, either. The dog in the first and last panel looks like the same dog, but that wouldn't make sense. Does that community just have a lot of brown and white dogs or what? You know, if you're going to try to sell a product using a racist triptych, at least make it make sense! Also, that's some honkin' huge corn!
Maybe they got bored with watermelon? But yeah, I can't figure out the connection to vinegar. My guess is the boy and dog are recurring characters, but...what does it have to do with fruit vinegar?
Because a lot of vintage ads WERE sexist and racist, and this is a vintage ads community. In hindsight, most of them are sadly hysterical. Or good old-fashioned schadenfreude.
yyyyyyeahhh...there's a reason it's not ok to make ads like that any more.
At first, I thought it was ironic or sort of funny to think about how these ads were made and put it in terms of how far we've come.
But then when I saw like 3 offensive ads in a row, I started to feel like it was just an excuse to show off racism and sexism. And that gut feeling got stronger. In hindsight, the ads are still super offensive.
This community is not about taking apart these ads and talking about why they are not ok, if it was then I wouldn't feel wrong about it. But it's not. People post racist and sexist ads all the time. And the thing is, the world is still that way. It's just more internalized and hidden.
I'm going to leave this here in hopes I'll remember if it comes up again:
Henry Louis Gates on his collection of racist memorabilia (http://www.theroot.com/views/should-blacks-collect-racist-memorabilia) and why he feels it's important to preserve the past. There's also a lot about how this imagery basically increased in the Jim Crow era.

It's not ok. Bye bye community.
