I used to live in New York and happened to catch a ride on one of the vintage subway cars they would pull out rarely for special events. It was the kind you see in the original King Kong when Kong decides part of his Escape To Manhattan Rampage should include demolising a section of elevated track on the West Side. There were old fashioned looped straps for the standees to hold, the seats were caned, which was charming (they even put up vintage ads inside) but the fan blades were bare and the light bulbs naked. I watched a guy blindly reach up for the usual bar just to grab the lit bulb. At least no one chopped off a finger in the fan. At least not while I was onboard. But safety as we think of it was pretty much unheard of then.
