They didn't have elaborate child safety car seats when I was a tot in the 1960s, but I would have totally kicked the dog out of that bag and climbed in it myself when I was 4 or 5. Wheeee! Go faster, dad!
if you won't let your dog in the car...LEAVE IT THE HELL HOME!!
the wee servicebeast does not like riding in the crate in the car, and complains. loudly at times. (other times she chews something absolutely inappropriate, like her leash.) but wee dogs will bounce from the seat to the floor at any unexpected braking, and so that's not a good thing either.
but...wow. that does not look appropriate at ANY place in time!
I've heard tell of a grandfather having the family dog ride on the running board without benefit of canvas dog bag, just cause the car was full of humans. In his defense I don't think the vehicle went terribly fast as highways as we understand them did not yet exist. And it's not like the humans were much better protected back in the day either. I don't think any of our vehicles growing up had seat belts when I was small. I have very clear memories of the parents automatically shooting out a right arm if they had to make a sudden stop.

I had a huge giggle at your comment. I remember one time, while riding in the front seat with my Mom, where the car in front of us stopped suddenly and my Mom threw out her arm and practically clothes-lined me! So much for going through the windshield when you can get decapitated by a forearm! LOL!
I used to live in New York and happened to catch a ride on one of the vintage subway cars they would pull out rarely for special events. It was the kind you see in the original King Kong when Kong decides part of his Escape To Manhattan Rampage should include demolising a section of elevated track on the West Side. There were old fashioned looped straps for the standees to hold, the seats were caned, which was charming (they even put up vintage ads inside) but the fan blades were bare and the light bulbs naked. I watched a guy blindly reach up for the usual bar just to grab the lit bulb. At least no one chopped off a finger in the fan. At least not while I was onboard. But safety as we think of it was pretty much unheard of then.
