It's largely the creation of one man, that's why, as an opposite of wealth (in the meaning of weal (- the common weal). Never caught on.

IKR? Why would the fact that it's from a "Soviet" source necessarily make it non-credible? It's a scientific definition, not political ideology.

That IS a safe boiler-plate to slap on anything that comes from the Soviet dictionary though. They probably don't want to vet every single definition, so better safe than sorry.
