I think the reason these people were having 'acid fur' is because they were early users of LSD. Perfectly foreshadows the hippy experience AND a great name for a 60s band.
You do know that milk of magnesia is used as an antacid and a laxative, right? Both of which involve ingestion? (For more, there's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium_hydroxide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium_hydroxide))
Probably, though it would depend on what's being used as the abrasive. IIRC, baking soda (or Sodium Bicarbonate for the chemical-phobic) is also used as an abrasive in many toothpastes.
The quotation marks around 'milk of magnesia' kind of scare me. Maybe that's the main ingredient in Peppy Bismilk (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gladiolabean/4067849360/).
