Frito-Lay Ads Then and Now: possible fail
Sep. 22nd, 2012 02:18 pmRemember the Frito Bandito? I wish I didn't but it is what it is.

What in the hell are "keeds"? No, I know. Don't tell me.

Not sure the exact year of these, butthe source I found these at said 1950s. they appear to be from the 1970s.
This is from 2009:

It's kind of hard to read, but here's what they are saying:
Woman on left: These are the best invention since the push-up bra.
Woman on right: I wouldn't go that far.
A boobies joke? Only in a Woman's World? So Baked Lay's are only for women? How is this more inclusive? Link to article here.

Date: 2012-09-22 06:52 pm (UTC)The horrid sexist BS of the second ad is no better, is it?

Date: 2012-09-22 07:10 pm (UTC)I totally agree about the second ad. Yes, women only care about our figures! Who cares whether the chips are healthier, which I have heard they really aren't.

Date: 2012-09-24 12:04 pm (UTC)I don't remember what the 'benefit' of being in the club was, but I do remember having the eraser as well as some vague recollection of some 'humorous' stuff written in that accent.

Date: 2012-09-24 02:55 pm (UTC)I don't much about this character other than a few images I've seen, but I get the idea he was sort of like the vintage Speedy Gonzales--who is actually still around. I was shocked to see him still around in that Bugs Bunny show on Cartoon Network.

Date: 2012-09-24 06:27 pm (UTC)I wouldn't be surprised to find that eraser in the back of some drawer somewhere. It's the kind of weird thing I'd be unlikely to throw out.
Speedy Gonzalez's awful 'Mexican' accent is a good comparison for how I remember the Frito Bandito sounding. Shoot, he may even have been voiced by Mel Blanc. He looks better in the ad above than I remembered him. I guess it's due to so much time passing, but I always think of him looking more scruffy, like a bad guy from a spaghetti western.

Date: 2012-09-22 10:49 pm (UTC)f'ed up family history...TheEngineer's dad was born in mexico. *his* grandfather was killed by pancho villa's troups (this is the family belief, the man was an anglo engineer/blasting expert/mining supervisor who disappeared between home and work) and the family lost nearly all their property/wealth. i met (and was welcomed by) his family when the Matriarch passed away...
half the family looks anglo with irish coloring, half of them look lantino. just, wild. :) (thats us on the wedding day in the icon pic)

Date: 2012-09-23 12:41 am (UTC)Also, as you saw in my other post, you know my husband is South African. I love it when people, like coworkers or something, will look at a picture of my nearly 100% white kids (with a pinch of Cherokee thrown in--at least going by what my Grandma said) and say something like, "oh, are those your children from a previous marriage?" I'll say, "no, why?" Then they'll say, "but I thought you said your husband was African." Yes, he is African. And he's white. Yep, that's totally possible. It's amazing how many people I have had to educate about that.
Cute, picture, too. Awwwww! :)
