Hi there! I'm a newbie to the comm. I collect comic books and I have a large collection of issues from the 70s and 80s. So expect a lot of that kind of stuff in my posts.
I thought I was immune to the drug-fueled weirdness that usually permeates the ads in 70s comic books. But this one legitimately surprised me:

Believe it or not, the surprise didn't primarily come from the bizarre and mildly racist assertion that the Japanese are X-Men mutants (though that is pretty weird). But mainly because this is the book I found it in:
=====

So, yeah, the first generation of Scooby Doo fans were told that Japanese people have "physio-mental" mutant powers that allow them to turn invisible! And that we could turn invisible as well if we just sent them money.
Not gonna lie, I kinda wish I could get a hold of that "Killers of the Orient" book because I bet it was hilarious.

Me, I want a Transogram Ka-Bala (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKOzIf6v52o), such as I had when I was six or eight or so. Man, those things were the coolest.

Date: 2012-05-08 07:35 pm (UTC)As far as what you said about the Japanese X-Men thing, that mystique about Asians still persists that most of them know martial arts, excel at math and science, and are wiser than their non-Asian peers. Although these are favorable traits, even so-called positive stereotypes can be racist. Just the other day I saw an ad for a computer that showed Asian women fighting over a power outlet. I mean, really? I dunno. Maybe it bothered me more than it should.
