Ole Tequila (1975)
Apr. 1st, 2012 10:20 amWhat? They don't really have porn staches? Aw, someone just played a prank! April Fool's!

The ad was really that way, but I have no idea why. It's from the January 1975 issue of Texas Monthly. I cannot tell if it's really supposed to be like that or if someone altered the image before it was scanned. I can't find any other defacement in this issue so maybe it was meant to be that way to grab attention. It almost seems like I remember an ad campaign from when I was a kid that had people with mustaches drawn on them on purpose and maybe this was part of that campaign. I found it here.
ETA: On page 15.
ETA (2): racism tag added. Wow, did I misread this thing or what?

The Frito Bandito
or MAD magazine's Sergio Aragones:
Tequila = Mexico = stereotypes so that gringos will understand.

Date: 2012-04-01 08:42 pm (UTC)Racism or not, the tequila is called Olé, and they've drawn mustaches on the photo (yes, to attract the eye - and to make it look "Mexican"), and the ad copy says, "It's got that Mexican spirit."
You asked why, and I replied, knowing that that was the thrust of the ad campaign. In 1975. I showed a comparative ad from a similar timeframe.
I did not even mention the fact that it was published in Texas.
I do not understand the tone implied, unless - as is often the case with the written word - you were being cheeky. Your emphasis of "non-racist" leads me to think that you weren't, and that I simply thought of the "racist" angle first.
