Question: this ad seems to be aimed at the husband, but given that this is 1951, how many husbands were really reading through Women's Home Journal to see it?

Maybe the theory was that the wife would leave the magazine open at the appropriate page and the husband would take the hint, or something.

This is so irrelevant to the actual post but I've been searching and searching for an image of the barstool like that for a picture I'm working on (I needed one toppled and found it,but the exact same design in the position I needed it in eluded me) and this barstool is exactly what I needed.

>_> So yeah, thank you!

I need that cart, like, NOW! Red or yellow would be fine, but if you know someone who can do a custom orange job, that would be even better.

And yes, I would be thrilled to get it for Christmas!

About 11 years ago when I moved into an apartment the previous tentant left a yellow cart just like the one above. I loved it and wanted to repaint it. Never did and it got thrown out when my husband and I divorced. Wished I would've saved it now. Now I know where it came from and how old it was.

Those kitchen stepstools are nigh indestructible. I know of two or three still in good use now. When I was a kid, I was absolutely fascinated by how the steps tucked in under the seat.

We had one when I was growing up. They don't ever go away.

I've seen old episodes of The Donna Reed Show and Father Knows Best and they each have one of those chair/ladders. I think they're both in white. They must have been all the rage back then.

I don't think the Cleavers or the Nelsons had one, though, but I could be wrong.

That little stool would be an artist's dream if it had nice, easy wheels. Okay, THIS artist's dream.

my granny had one of the stepstool chairs, but i know it had to have been from the mid 60's, unless someone gave it to them as a replacement. (their rural house burned to ashes, down to the foundation, in january of 1865.)

great ad, nice and colorful!

We had one of the 4-D step stools in our kitchen when I was growing up. It was how I could get up to the stove to cook the cream of wheat when I was 6. :-)

My grandparents had the red one with the 2 stools. I remember it still looked good even in the early 90's, and I know they must have purchased it between 1948-1952.

These are great! I'd take any of those (well, not the high chair as I have no children) in the green or yellow! :)

My grandmother had the stepstool model in yellow in her kitchen when I was a kid

I used to play with it all the damned time, until one day I somehow managed to close it with my hand still wrapped around one of the legs, and it crushed my fingers and turned my nails blue. She kept it out of my reach after that. >

And now I'm wondering whatever happened to it... I don't remember seeing it when we emptied out her apartment. I'm going to have to ask my dad tomorrow.

Because nothing says "I love you" like a stepping stool I don't have to get my ass up off the couch to reach something on the top shelf, honey.

I dunno if it's Cosco but these things are still being sold! We bought the red step-stool for my mother not two years ago.

I grew-up with 4-D, in brown, at my grandparents' house. When I was little, I used to love to play with the stow-able steps.

I remember we had a cart like that when I was a kid, but it wasn't a cool 50s yellow like that. It was more of a puke 70s beige.

I kinda like 4-D. It's a multitasker! On the other hand, if I were to use it as a step stool, I would need to move it and it might be heavy and awkward.
