A woman properly keeps her hat on when she is visiting, but always removes it in her own home. A man always doffs his hat indoors. This is also why women keep their hats on during church and the national anthem, when a man doing so would be beyond the pale. Rules for men's and women's hats are completely different.
It's because a man that prayeth with his head covered dishonoreth his head, but a woman who prayeth with her head uncovered dishonereth her head, on account of looking like a prostitute.
Yeah; many religions used to -strongly- suggest that women's heads be covered in public. It's sort of an interesting, strange little tidbit to look into.
All the pins and things, and those hats created hat-head! I remember my mother (early 60s) would wear the weird hat pinned to her hair the whole time she was out.
