...because nothing says "medically necessary" like habitually dosing toddlers with laxatives.

After 3, I think this should end pretty differently. Catfight, maybe.

One hopes the adoptive mom watched the Ginger Rogers film "Bachelor Mother" to know how to handle such situations.

Oh man that movie! Did you see the remake from the 50s with Debbie Reynolds? I saw that version first and was overcome with adoration for the cheese and songs and the almost parody of itself, and was amazed when I realized that almost every Debbie Reynolds movie I have seen was a remake of a much better film from the 30s or 40s.

I think they play "Bachelor Mother" every year at Christmastime on TCM. I don't know why it's only that time of year, but I always look forward to it (both versions)!

This is a tad bit strange.

"Raising her like an orchid?" Okay.. "Special Diapers, special foods and special rubbing oil?" I'll let that one slide,, "Special Laxative??" OK FUCK YOU, I'M PISSED OFF NOW.

Wait, why is it important that she adopted the baby?

Well, it wouldn't sound right if they said 'This baby should have never been born!' or 'She should have had an abortion!'

The real crime against humanity is those hats.

I was thinking the same thing. Were women's hats really that stupid looking in the 40s?

They remind me of those whimsically-folded towels they leave for guests on cruise ships. The ones they shape to look like animals and stuff.

The hats are almost enough to make me suspicious of just which planet/alternate dimension these photos were taken in.

I don't know why the ad makes a point of the baby being adopted... but I do like the fact that the mother calls her 'my baby' to the catty hat ladies. I know they're only a fictional family but I hope that in little fictional world, the baby grew up to be a confident happy woman, secure in her mother's love and well capable of negotiating her youth in the turbulent 'sixties.
WHO POOPS LIKE A MACHINE.

I was adopted in the late 60s, myself; and I've read a lot about adoption in the 40s-50s. It was part of the post-war baby boom problem, all those unwed mothers, what to do with the babies, etc. (Tear them out of their parents' willing arms, in all too many cases, but that's another story. D:)

I think the ad's just addressing all those women out there who no-doubt had to face the "not as good as a ~real mother" remarks. I like the "my baby", too.

They don't need to take off their hats, they're only going to be there long enough to get ~schooled, lol.

I'm a little concerned that my mother used to give me this from an old dusty bottle she kept under the bathroom sink. I wonder if it was from the '40's?!

FWIW, I thought it tasted awesome...but I also used to lick butter for kicks, so what the heck do I know?

It was still around in the late 50s and early 60s when I was too young to protest. I regularly got a spoonful of that stuff after a holiday or a party. Never any other time. I guess that plaster-of-paris cake frosting was an issue, or maybe just rich food.
