Good Housekeeping, 1935:

The sexiest itch ever

I think the only word we need to know here is WOOL.

I imagine that those things made decent workout wear, once it got wet and jumped 5x in weight.

I kind of covet the first one. For lying about in, not swimming in though.

Yeah. Id totally wear that if we made a modern one that looked exactly the same, but (obviously) were made in different fabric-something swimable. I really really really like the ribbing and the pattern change halfway through-like an empire waist type effect. If there was a suit made to look like that that was made to work in water, I'd buy that sucker in a heartbeat.

It looks knitted! I would never want to wear that in the water.

I'm just getting this awful visual of it getting wet, and promptly doing one (or both) of the following:

-- clinging to ALL the wrong spots in ALL the wrong ways;
-- stretching out in all sorts of unflattering ways.

Yeurgh.

My first impression was "Gramma spent all winter knitting you that suit, so you're gonna wear it on the family beach trip!"

Okay, I'll say it…

A coworker of mine went to Girl Scout camp years ago, when they wore wool bathing suits. She said that indeed, they never really dried out till camp and morning swimtime was over.
