Evidently, the wheelbase on this car is asymmetrical? longer on one side by an inch or so than the other. The passenger side door IS longer by about 2 inches. There is a guy who goes to swing dancing who drives one. (He looks like a guy who'd drive a Pacer). The car actually is kind of cool in an uber-nerd way...BUT they have a point...A car doesn't have to be long to hold 6 people, just wide.
This car was hampered by a bad power plant (bad acceleration and gas mileage easily as bad as a big car) terrible fit and finish, and rust problems... It also heated up like a greenhouse, but let me tell you... It was unique.
The sales pitch? "YOU ONLY RIDE LIKE A PACER IF YOU'RE WIDE LIKE A PACER!"
My friend's parents had a Pacer when we were in high school. (They'd also had one of the first Civics.) We loved going cruising in it because it was so distinctive. The design also made for great visibility from inside the car. However, that big curved windshield was quite fragile. I think they had to replace it a couple of times and it always had dings.
Never seen the freaking movie, but remember the commercial. How does that happen? And yes, as a kid in the mid 70's early 80's I thought this was a cool futuristic car, now I duck in shame. The older you get, the wiser you become.
"Wayne's World! Wayne's World! Party time! Excellent!"
yeah, after seeing that movie as a kid i always wanted a Pacer ... but living in Germany i never saw one of them. the when i was about 14 or 15 i found a cardealer that had some rare stuff standing around and inbetween it a V8 version of the Pacer. back then i could have got it for about 100 D.Mark. yes, i really went in there and asked them! i even was allowed to get into it. I couldnt get any closer to my fand'm for Waynes World and a Pacer. sadly i was too young and the pacer was pretty run down already. it was white with late 80s surf and skateboard airbrush on it which was done really bad. no bumbers, lots of rust and moss on the windows. ... and as far as i can remember the egine was also in need of some mechanical attention. ... all in all a heap of junk but in my eyes it was a dream come true.
well, we didnt buy that pacer and since that day ive seen like perhaps 5 pacers? ... and thats over 10 years ago.
still ... id like to own one ... in baby blue with little flames on the sides :D
I had one! It was ugly (yellow, with fake wood paneling!) , but really durable, took a lot of abuse without complaint, and drove great even in mountain snowstorms that I had no business trying to drive through.
We had a Pacer station wagon when I was a kid. It was silver with fake wood and was butt-ugly. But inside it seemed huge, just like the ad says.
And yes, I posted earlier about my parents having owned an Isetta. We had a lot of memorable cars: the Isetta, the Pacer, for a while my dad had a Corvair, a Pinto... The cars were the bane of my existence as I got dropped off or picked up at school. I'd love to have that Pacer back, though, even if it was a mechanical nightmare.
