While cleverly disguised as just another magazine article, this is actually an ad for Bildcost, Better Homes & Gardens Magazine's own home construction design business:

many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] glowing_dragon for bringing this LJ feature to my attention....since i've only been on LJ for 11 years and was unaware of this, i'm thinkering perhaps other community members might not be aware of this and might be interested in this feature.....

some people don't like videos to show on their friends page, and in some cases it can/will slow them down....hence our request on movie trailer day to please put them behind a cut, otherwise, there's no real 'rule' here for that.....now, thanks to glowing_dragon, i learned you can put a placeholder for videos on entries....so if a video isn't behind a cut, there'd be a placeholder there....

go to account--if you are on your friends page, then select 'settings'; if you are on your profile page, select 'profile' then settings'

placeholder1

either one you hit, you end up here, select 'display' please

placeholder2

you'll see the 4th option down is 'video placeholder' (yes, above it is image placeholder you could set that up just like for video too), you can select a video placeholder for entries or even comments

placeholder3

select in an entry (also in comments if you wish), then scroll down and save

placeholder4

what you will now see when there's a video in an entry is this, to play the video you just click on it and the video will show, then you hit play as you usually would

since i have to do this for edward, i thought i'd post a 'how to' here IN CASE perhaps we have a closest edward, or in case you have an edward in your life and you cannot properly explain the adobe flash/FF situation to them and how to still get flash activated.....

ETA: you might wanna ensure you have latest version of flash here directly....even with the latest version you very well will probably encounter these situations on firefox....[/ETA]

yes, edward could not see the activate adobe.....so if faced with this, click on 'ACTIVATE ADOBE FLASH'.....

adobe1

then you will get this box popping up....now if you hit allow and remember it might NOT remember and it won't be your fault, it'll be FF's fault....so if that happens and you are confronted with something as in step one again on another site, then repeat this step....just select allow and remember

adobe2

you MIGHT face this situation---edward has never been able to see this option, no he's not blind....if so, select as for step 2.....

It was requested and it was done! :) How to do lj cuts. I've also made how to's for scheduled posts and embedding a video. If you think of another topic for a 'how to' please just let me know!! I created a 'how to' tag.

I have done the lj cut walk thru with both html posting and visual editor posting. Step one is the same for both, then follow the cut for how you post on LJ for a step by step guide for using a LJ cut!

For either posting methods, the first two steps are the same, you select this to put a cut into your post:

cut1

After you select that, this box pops up. Here you have the opportunity to put anything you want as the wording for your cut OR leave it how it is with 'read more':

Several members have expressed having a problem knowing how to embed a video in an entry (please note that embedding videos in comments doesn't often work, this is just for embedding a video in an entry), so I thought I'd make a screen capped walk thru to hopefully help people.

Find whatever vintage ad you want on youtube, then hit the 'share' button (highlighted in screen cap).

embed1

Tap it and the first option you see is just the url, but you see 'embed' (highlighted in screen cap).

embed2

When you tap embed this is what shows and it already will be ready for you to just either cut or copy the embed code. I obviously highlighted it here. [Please denote SOME videos are not embeddable, it will say so on the video when you hit embed. I have no idea how/why some uploaders do that, it's annoying, just find the video from another poster who allows it to be embedded if you encounter that.]

embed3

Now go to livejournal to post. I always use HTML posting (I have a feeling perhaps sometimes errors happen via the visual editor), just paste the code in your entry and obviously write whatever you want, put a subject, tag (if you wish), etc. Then hit post.

embed4

Embedded video! :)

Perhaps you have some ads for upcoming events but you won't be around to post them? (Or even want to schedule a post for your own LJ?) Well, let me walk you through how to do a scheduled post! Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] write_light for first telling members about how to do this. I've tried this myself and it DOES work! I've done some screen caps, as I know I learn quicker sometimes with a visual. And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ms_geekette for pointing out that if your posting here (or in any community) is moderated, you can't use this. (Re: moderated posting here, after you've posted a couple posts, I'll approve you for unmoderated, THEN you can use this here in Vintage Ads! :)

Just go to create a new post, as you normally would. That is how the date normally looks, but you see that 'change' next to the time? Please hit that.

post1

Now you have this, where you can adjust the date and time.

post2

As soon as you put the cursor in the date box to change the day a calendar pops up to select the date (or to even change the month).

post3

Once you've selected your date, change the time. Please remember, time must be in 24 hour increments. As in 6pm must be as 18:00. I guess that's military time?

post4

Do your post as normal, then hit post and you get this.

post5

If later on you want to edit your post, change something, etc. You can find your scheduled posts when you hit your 'journal' tab.
