A ball point pen is gravity based, so it won't work when turned upwards. Pens that will work upside down (most gel pens, the space pen) are based on pressure.
...Except, you know, the pencil gets graphite dust all ove rthe cabin, and the astronauts inhale it, and it's not really all that good to inhale graphite. And eraser shavings...man, have you ever accidentally inhaled those? I mean, the weird shavings that come off certain art erasers makes you cough for days afterward....
I got my first Waterman as a high school graduation gift. It's a beautiful marbled red and gold with a gold nib (or gold-plated?) and totally got me hooked on fountain pens.
Which is clearly why he's so happy - it's fun to use them, except for when the ink needs refilling, or a bit of paper fuzz gets stuck to the nib, or you forget to cap it for a day or two and the ink is all dried up, or when you accidentally start writing at an odd angle and scratch the paper up.
I like dip pens, actually. I get to have an excuse for writing in mirror-script (I'm left-handed). Also people tend to come up to you, if you're hanging out in a cafe, answering a love letter with a dip-pen.
what's he writing?
