1943 YWCA upholstering ad/article
Summer 1943 McCall's Needlework Knitting Crocheting magazine. At first glance, this looks like an article about a YWCA class on re-upholstering furniture to make it last longer during wartime shortages. However, I think it still qualifies as an ad, because the last line says that there is an instructional leaflet one can order via mail. The details on page 64 say that this leaflet costs 10 cents, which is the most expensive of all the leaflets offered in this magazine. I'm pretty sure that the 10 cents and self-addressed stamped envelope just cover the magazine's costs, though.

I've found the craft magazines to be less patronizing and emotionally manipulative (to my modern eye) than the "women's" mags like Better Homes and Gardens. There seems to be a very no-nonsense quality to the craft magazine ads.

For the record, I would totally take this class if it were offered at my local YWCA today. Sounds like fun!

Just watch HGTV and DIY.
I have learned to do all of that stuff on the shows they have! Design on a Dime is the best!

It's YWCA, not, as the heading says, YMCA (sorry, second gen YMCA professional here, and I got all excited before looking closer :P).

Yeah, there were wonderful publications out. One I have that I am very fond of is "How to Bucher Your Own Livestock". They take it from rabbits traight on up. You never know when these how to books may come in handy.

Cool. Just the way to whittle away those long winter evenings in the back woods.
