This one's for the commentor a couple of weeks ago who despairingly asked whether ALL vintage ads were oppressive to women. I guess there's always a bright spot somewhere.
Aw, geddawffit - that kid's gonna be toting a rifle with the rest of his graduating class! There's a War on!
- I would have asked whether the women reading those ads felt “oppressed” by them, or indeed at all. That's not a question one is supposed to ask, of course. (If not, it's only because they've “internalized their oppression.” Circular reasoning works because circular reasoning works because circular…)
I feel certain the original commentor meant "oppressive toward women" as seen through a modern lens, in much the same way that we laugh at now ludicrous ads for soda including cocaine or for menstruation products which never mention what they're for.
