The best safety feature was probably that you looked so silly that you never wanted to be seen driving the thing.

On a side note, my father once accidentally ran over one of those little BMW's with an armored personnel carrier when he was stationed in Germany long ago. The owner had apparently decided that parking in the middle of a convoy stopped by the road was a good idea. Fortunately, the guy wasn't in the car at the time. He has a picture of what was left of it somewhere that was taken by one of the German officals who was accompanying the convoy.
