[identity profile] tvini.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] vintageads

October 1943 Better Homes and Gardens. Because of the war, Maytag isn't making washing machines right now, but they don't want to be forgotten.

The "all sizes" button on flickr will bring up a view you can actually read. Up until now I've just been folding my sheets once over the line. Apparently I've been doing it wrong!

I think they would stay wet longer unless turned. Huh.

It's probably a reference to "Solomon Grundy, born on Monday..." Still not great, but I would guess that's where they got it.

It's an old bit of doggerel that I had to look up at Wikipedia because I only knew the first line:

Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday.
That was the end of
Solomon Grundy.

And like the poster above me said, Monday was traditionally wash day, so it does make some sense. Tuesday was ironing, Wednesday sewing, Thursday shopping, Friday cleaning, Saturday baking, Sunday resting. That's why all the food ads are in your Wednesday paper!

That advert is wrong anyway. You pin one edge to the line, then pin the other edge to the line as well so that it is halved with the fold hanging at the bottom. Or better yet pin the other edge to a washig line which runs paralele to the original one.

Don't these people know anything?????

But how do you hide your undies inside the linens that way?

Scandal!

Of course with all the menfolk off to war, there may not be much of anybody around to tittilate.

Of course that depends just WHOSE undies are on the washing line...

What am I saying? Undies? On the washing line?

Excuse me whilst I have conniptions!
