[identity profile] tvini.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] vintageads

Another from the Oct 1943 Better Homes and Gardens, full page and in color. This is for linoleum flooring, again using "saving fuel" as the advertising hook. I may be reading this wrong, but I think they're saying that they turned this lady's kitchen into two rooms. One mid-sized family room and one really tiny kitchen. The decorations are something else. Be sure to zoom in and see the "Waste Not Want Not" design on the cabinets. Also, a huge magazine rack of the type seen in doctor's waiting rooms in days gone by. "A few dollars for paint and chintz" indeed.

It's on wheels, she can probably roll it out of the way as needed. It also has the flaps - maybe they sit at that and just pull their chairs around it?

i've studied this picture far longer than i would admit, but even if they roll the table out and put the chairs around it, it would be a tight fit--especially with the flaps open...

The odd placement of the table was the first thing I noticed - then the 'Waste Not Want Not' - THAT gave me the creeps!

Yeah, I think the deal is that they save on heating costs, both by doubling the use of the room and closing off others, and because the new floor is insulated and sealed. That pattern in front of the sofa is a hoot. I have been in old farmhouses with "linoleum rugs" like that.

I also wonder where they actually eat, though.

It took me forever to figure out that the 'rug' was linoleum.

I sort of like the plan/idea but that Waste Not Want Not, Waste Not Want Not, Waste Not Want Not, Waste Not Want Not all around the kitchen! I would go insane!

that's probably what drove so many mothers in the 1950's to turn to 'mother's little helper'....

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Pennsylvania dutch (or whatever it's called) stuff, but the Waste Not Want Not over and over would make me a little crazy.

I like the "waste-container"!

A. It looks like this lot is living is a basement.

and

B. The furniture placement in this looks like an accident waiting to happen. Dad surely is going to take an eye out getting up past that strangely-angled shelf on the wall.

I think everyone has an ancient relative whose house still looks like that.
