I really don't get why girdle or shaper ads (vintage or current) never show fat women. I mean, we're the ones who are supposed to buy them. Why would the illustrated woman buy a girdle?
Actually, back in the day, thin women wore girdles so nobody would see their asses wiggle, which was considered unladylike. It's like a bra for your butt cheeks.
Check out the young Lauren Bacall in films like To Have and Have Not. She's totally slender, but from the way she walks, you can tell she has on a longish girdle that smoothes out her hips and backside but also gives her a sort of tight, suggestive walk.
