I grew up in the 60's and my stepdad was like the coverman for your all man, meat 'n' potatoes eating he man. My mom was no Mrs. Brady but she did prepare every dang meal we ate and I remember her complaining about how she just wanted to include a different starch to our always-balanced meals (meat, veg, starch were required or it simply was not dinner) - since the divorce she's rarely eaten potatoes. So I think this ad actually addresses a pretty common way of thinking: real men don't eat rice.
