Chaplin was a founder of United Artists, so maybe that's why the reviewer said that?

A quick Google brought me this: http://www.iath.virginia.edu/utc/onstage/duncanhp.html

What a depressing life to look back on when you're old: "hey kids, I was famous for being part of a super racist minstrel show!"

I don't go for that opinion that these things should be gotten rid of or anything like that. It's a part of U.S. history, a part of the growing pains of our culture. I find it disturbing that this is a comedy, but perhaps, back in the day, blacks and whites thought it was funny because it was a parody. I can't assume that though. I think it depends on who is poking fun. Like it's okay for most people if Italian-Americans are portraying Italian-Americans as bumbling but steely-eyed cold-blooded murdering goofballs. If non-Americans were doing it, it might be construed as offensive. It's a tricky line to walk..

I absolutely love how they're drawn on the bottom. Otherwise... wow. Well, at least the debbies and the collegians could enjoy the movie as well, I guess.

well it's no longer available on netflix, but Les Vampires a french serial from 1915 would be my favorite thus far...followed closely by The Strange Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Dr. Mabuse the Gambler [i named a cat of mine Mabuse!], Chaplin's Modern Times (still relevant today, what a genius that man was!), Nasferatu, Queen Kelly, anything silent by Erich Von Stroheim, The Chess Player, Films by Frank Oz---Wizard of Oz and Scarecrow shorts, George Melies was THE special effect wizard of the early 1900's! wonderful tricks he did, ...

i just LOVE silent films!!!!! if you couldn't tell!!! i also like D.W. Griffith pre-birth of a nation shorts---very moralistic and realistic of the times....20,000 Leagues under the Sea, The Lost World---awesome!! Olive Thomas--The Flapper....

i could talk about silent films all day!! :)

i have not watched that much Keaton, i don't know why....

Netflix has gotten cheaper....i have the 3 at a time plan and it's $17 a month...if i watch stuff right away i can average about 15-17 movies a month....they have cheaper plans too AND they have a LOT of movies you can watch instantly on your computer---no extra charge and it's unlimited!!!

they have 2 week free trials too!

i've been with them for 6 years....i highly recommend 'em!

Yeah, this looks like a real hoot.

Where did you find this?

I work part time at a frame shop and I framed a few old covers from sheet music, ragtime and stuff. The color covers had black folk on them, dancing to what was the Dark Town Strutters' Ball, and they were depicted with the most red and protruding lips i've ever seen. Comical and obscene. It never occurred to anyone that that was mighty obscene and hurtful - of course it occurred to the blacks. There was one with a white plantation woman dressed in white finery, talking to a little poor black boy, dressed in tatters. What song could have gone with that illustration? I did not recognize the song.

I thought of all of us here, wishing I could have copied them and posted them, they were disturbing and in really good condition.

I wonder what a "debbie" is; when my mom was in high school in the 70s that's what they called the posh kids so I wonder if the meaning changed.
