I've got a friend who did it, took 30 pounds off, and has kept them off for a good two years. I know most of these weight-loss programs are crap, but Weight Watchers actually does get high marks from experts.
Of course, I'm a load, so I probably shouldn't be talking about weight loss programs. Heh.
It works because it's not really a *diet,* per se, I don't think (in my opinion, anyway). It just sort of re-teaches you how and what to eat, and allows you to "cheat" if you do the points-system.
I'm like you though, my mom did it and offered me the booklets and I took one look and was like, "Erm, too lazy." Haha.
I lost 50 pounds on WW last year, and I've been maintaining for six months so far with little struggle. I'm about ready to go back to do the next round, because I'd still like to lose another 20. It definitely is more about real food than any of the other diets that are currently popular.

(I've recently lost 20 lbs on WW, so I can make fun of myself, here.)
