OK, I'm all on board with the health risks of smoking, and am a non-smoker myself, but I have to call bull at "the option that means she'll die of cancer." Sure, "the option that drastically increases her chances of dying of cancer." But to say that she WILL die of cancer is silly.
I used exaggeration to prop up the humour. Sorry if that wasn't clear. As a research scientist who works in an institute that studies cancer and tries to develop treatments, I'm pretty much aware of the smoking-related cancer death statistics and the fact that smoking does not guarantee a smoking-related death.
I was simply making a joke, not issuing a government health statement.
"Then I thought about all of the shoes that are available to me in the richest nation in the world, and I said to myself 'chunky denim clogs are a good idea.' Did I mention that I smoke? Really. It's True. Later I married Nathaniel Fisher and had three children, and I had an affair with a hairdresser. All True."
