I work in graphics and prepress, and these old hand-lettered ads amaze me. I can't envision a time when a shop would be willing to pay someone to do all that hand-lettering for such a cover. Even for someone skilled at lettering with the old Speedball pens, it would still take at least a full day to lay this out and draw it all.
The fact that it is printed in one color tells me that the customer wasn't willing to spend much money on printing this. And I'm imagining just such a customer's reaction in today's world at getting the bill for all of the "art time" involved in making this cover, and the subsequent fireworks.
