I have started scanning in my own personal collection of ads....i've always like 'different' kinds of ads....this is from the early 80's...on the back of it is another ad so i have no exact date....but Ayds was popular in the late 70's, early 80's...her clothing puts it about 79-82....

I not very adept at resizing a scan....any pointers would be greatly appreciated....

i hope this half size isn't too large before a cut....if so, please let me know...

I love the Ayds ads. I can remember being a little kid and my mom having some chocolate flavored Ayds.

I think the wide-legged pants in the "after" candid place it before 1980. The model's collar is a little big to be '80s as well.

I love that leering waiter.

I remember that stuff.

Random trufax, when I was learning how to drive (this would have been in the mid-80's) the driving school my mom hired to help me learn was AIDS Driving School.

I wonder if she kept anything with their logo on it?
*goes to look*

Hand me a fork, back away from that tray, and no one will get hurt.

Seriously, I went through a couple boxes of those and they did help you feel full. A lot of that was the hot beverage you drank while you ate them, however. They tasted like very old, very awful candy that your great-grammy made and hid until you found it years later.

Most re-sizes my kid does for me seem to run at 80%. It's too late at night for me to ask her now.

So far as Cathy Larson for Ayds and those collars? We be talking 'round about 1977. The collar actually touching the shoulders is the tip-off.

A laundromat I used to frequent had a machine inset in the wall that dispensed tiny, doll-sized, overpriced packages of brand name laundry detergent, softener, and bleach, and the huge sign above it read, "LAUNDRY AIDS."

Nothankyou.

Are you using Photoshop? Well, this might work in whatever program you use. I was told (in a seminar that my work paid for) not to reduce a picture all the way to final size in a big step, but to reduce it no more than 50% at a time, then sharpen a little before the next reduction. This preserves the detail, rather than leaving it all up to the software to guess which pixels to keep and which to throw away. I usually blur a bit to try and take out the halftone look -- one color at a time, erring on the side of not blurring enough, rather than turn the whole thing to mush.

If this doesn't seem to make sense, I can try to elaborate.

I haven't needed to use any, so this is not from experience. I did a google search on "photoshop tutorial" and there seem to be plenty -- a bewildering overdose of them, perhaps, in which it's hard to find what you want. So I went to YouTube and did the same search, and it might be more manageable. Here's one on resizing photos: http://youtube.com/watch?v=qu5adJfxuhw

"Sharpen" and "Blur" are both under the filter menu. Experiment on a copy (keep your original file untouched in case things get out of hand), and learn the virtues of the "fade" command -- ctrl-alt-f in Windows, command-shift-F on the Mac (I think), which lets you dial back the change you just made. I personally use an all-purpose 'unsharp mask' for sharpening and fade it (say about 50% on average), and an all-purpose 'gaussian blur' for my blur and fade that (again, about 50% on average, but it varies according to the situation).

Also, you can make scans look better by using Levels [ctrl-l in Windows, command-l on the Mac] -- press the 'auto' button and look at how the colors (usually) snap to a more vivid look. As with anything else, you can fade back if it's too much, or just undo if you don't like it as much.

And you're welcome. Play with stuff. Experiment. Work with copies instead of your one and only original file.
