I'm guessing it refers to the process used to make the 'O' shape. Probably some sort of extrusion gun.

The only thing I can find on it is on Page 2 of this PDF (http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/reprint/26/5/519.pdf).

(3) A ready-to-eat cereal made of 75% oat and 20% corn
and rye flours; made according to the patent from a dough
cooked to the boiling point of water, formed into small "donuts"
which are dried and subjected to a pressure of 80 to
100 Ibs. at a. temperature of 190°C. to 232°C. in from 5¿
to 6i minutes and exploded or puffed by releasing pressure.
This product is hereinafter referred to as gun exploded
oats-corn-rye cereal.3
