The loser of the video disc format in 1984 It's very similar to the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray format war of today. The winner in the mid 1980's was the Pioneer Laserdisc (ad of the RCA Video Disc behind cut)

We had one of those. Pretty slick. We watched movies on it all the time. The media was like a really finely cut record, if you removed it from the casing (not really a good idea) the grooves would reflect light like a prism.
